History of Tyumen

Tyumen was founded on July 29, 1586 by voivodes Vasily Sukin and Ivan Myasnoy on the site of the Tatar town of Chingi-Tura, which was the capital of the Tyumen Khanate. Thus Tyumen became the first Russian city in Siberia. The city was built as a fortress to protect Russian lands from nomadic raids and as a starting point for the development of Siberia. Over the centuries, Tyumen has grown from a small fortress into a large trading city. In the 19th century, the Trans-Siberian Railway passed through Tyumen, which gave a powerful impetus to the development of the city. In the 20th century, after the discovery of oil and gas fields in the north of the Tyumen region, the city became the oil capital of Russia. Today Tyumen is a modern city with a developed infrastructure, science, culture and education.
