Tyumen was founded on July 29, 1586 by voivodes Vasily Sukin and Ivan Myasnoy on the site of the Tatar town of Chingi-Tura, which was the capital of the Tyumen Khanate. Thus Tyumen became the first Russian city in Siberia. The city was built as a fortress to protect Russian lands from nomadic raids and as a starting point for the development of Siberia. Over the centuries, Tyumen has grown from a small fortress into a large trading city.
